This year we had The Sandman TV show, and that was amazing! After its debut on streaming, there was news of “Dead Boy Detectives,” another adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s comic book universe. The name enthralled me to see where the story would go.

Dead Boy Detectives is a comic book written by Pornsak Pichetshote (Infidel, Good Asian) and part of DC Black Label, a mature selection of stories from DC Comics with “Elseworlds” vibes. This new miniseries features Edwin Paine and Charles Rowland, two ghost kids who decide to be detectives. The first issue tells the story in four chapters where we meet the protagonists, the villain of the miniseries, unlikely allies, and where the story takes us.

The miniseries feels like a fresh coat of paint on a genre that has been around for ages. One thing that stands out besides the story is the illustrations by Jeff Stokely, who contrasts the anime-like style of animation with gruesome, graphic images. As well as Miquel Muerto gives a supernatural aura with its coloring and colorful panels. As a fan of detective stories “Dead Boy Detectives” brings out a rich universe to explore with Edwin and Charles while they uncover some of the underworld’s biggest mysteries.

Dead Boy Detectives will soon be an eight episode TV show on HBO Max.

Este año tuvimos la serie de televisión The Sandman, ¡y fue increíble! Tras su estreno en streaming, llegaron noticias de «Dead Boy Detectives», otra adaptación del universo de Neil Gaiman. El nombre me cautivó desde el principio porque quería ver por dónde iría la historia.
Dead Boy Detectives es un cómic escrito por Pornsak Pichetshote (Infidel, Good Asian) y forma parte del DC Black Label, una marca con contenido adulto de historias de DC Comics con toques de historias «Elseworlds». La nueva miniserie de Pichetshote está protagonizada por Edwin Paine y Charles Rowland, dos niños fantasmas que deciden ser detectives. El primer ejemplar cuenta la historia en cuatro capítulos donde conocemos a los protagonistas, al villano, a unos amigos extraños e inusuales y hacia dónde nos llevará la historia.
La miniserie se siente como una nueva capa de pintura sobre un género que ha existido durante años en medio de los comics. Algo que se destaca, además de la historia, son las ilustraciones de Jeff Stokely, que contrasta el estilo anime de la animación con imágenes violentas y gráficas. Así como, el colonizador Miquel Muerto, da un aura sobrenatural con su coloridos y asombrantes paneles. Como fan de las historias de detectives, «Dead Boy Detectives» ofrece un rico universo para explorar con Edwin y Charles mientras descubren algunos de los mayores misterios del inframundo.
Puntuación: 9/10
Dead Boy Detectives tendrá una adaptación para televisión en HBO Max.
